<image:title>Screaming Females - screaming females</image:title>
<image:caption>Formed in New Brunswick, NJ in 2005, Screaming Females is Marissa Paternoster (guitar, vox), Mike Abbate (bass), and Jarrett Dougherty (drums). "Marissa Paternoster is one of the best guitar players alive.” -Kathleen Hanna Once you start looking for them, you’ll see desire paths everywhere. In parks and driveways, parking lots and apartment complexes, in front of corner stores, libraries, schools and offices. “Maybe there was one in your neighborhood growing up, a corner where everyone decided it took too long to go around, so they made their own pathway to cut through,” says Marissa Paternoster, singer and guitarist of Screaming Females. “There’s this cool unsaid group consciousness that comes together where everyone decides, this is the right way to go.” Now a band for half the lifetime of its members, Screaming Females have long been pounding out their own desire path. Formed in 2005 in New Brunswick, NJ, the trio has consistently created a hearty, surprising mix of indie-, alt-, punk- and stoner-rock, all with their original line-up of Paternoster, “King Mike” Mike Abbate (bass) and Jarrett Dougherty (drums). Released on February 17th by Don Giovanni Records, Desire Pathway was recorded at Minnesota’s Pachyderm Studios (where Nirvana recorded In Utero) and produced by Matt Bayles (Foxing, Pearl Jam, Mastodon, et al). Bright and full, the album captures the band at a time when nothing was certain other than their abiding desire to make music together. Desire Pathway opens with the Sabbathy hypnotism of “Brass Bell.” Following a swelling haze of synth, feedback shrieks, martial snares advance, and the band explodes into a bracing groove. Soon, Paternoster makes the cryptic announcement: “I have flown us to the moon,” and we’re off. The song has the effect of clearing one haze and replacing it with another, much heavier one. Compared with their previous record (2018’s expansive All at Once), Desire Pathway feels refreshed and direct. “Beyond the Void” may gather gloomily, but it quickly releases into its jangly, memorable chorus. Single “Mourning Dove” successfully channels the Pixies into a tight, driving power-pop song that passionately declares “my love for you is too strong to hide.” Now 18 years and eight albums in, Screaming Females are still making their own path in the world, still touring DIY and releasing music without compromise. The route might cut a little off the main road, but you’ll quickly see there’s a reason they’re on it. You just might like where it leads you. <image:title>DUSK - dusk</image:title>
<image:caption>Dusk is a group that walks the shadowed path. It's well known in the rural pastures of Wisconsin, where all of the members of this group were raised, that the traditional music of the common people is Polka, but the most respected form of musical expression is Country and Western. Dusk walks cleanly between these two worlds; pulling influence from both but most strongly associating with Rock & Roll and Rhythm & Blues. They bring with them a strong, informed, melodic statement that draws a line between themselves and the trend of bubble gum pop and country-influenced mall schlock. The group consists of vocalist Julia Blair on Wurlitzer electric piano, Colin "Wild Man" Wilde on drums and percussion, Amos Pitsch on bass guitar and vocals, Tyler Ditter on lead guitar, and Ryley Crowe on rhythm guitar, pedal steel, and vocals. Amos also doubles as a member of Appleton, Wisconsin punk band Tenement. The group is often compared to 60's garage and R&B groups like NRBQ and THE LOVIN SPOONFUL, early 70's country rock pioneers THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS, and at times the primitive rock and roll sound of a group like THE VELVET UNDERGROUND. They hint at all these things, even as something in their music seems to breathe modern air. It's a feeling that few musicians that attempt to nod to prior generations can capture without bastardising the very music that they intended to salute. Dusk have done it well, and in their music, you'll find this plain truth among many exciting secrets. <image:title>Career Suicide - CAREER SUICIDE</image:title>
<image:caption>Career Suicide is a purist hardcore punk band from Toronto, Canada. Formed in 2001, the band was founded by vocalist Martin Farkas and guitarist Jonah Falco (who splits his time as drummer of Fucked Up). The band has multiple records under it's belt and is no stranger to performing in all corners of the World. Writhing, sneering, tight cornered Machine Response is the only acceptable follow up album to the blistering and landmark Attempted Suicide. Nearly ten years of beating around the bush, casually playing around the world and drip releasing music along the way, Career Suicide is backed by their best lineup ever, ready to break back through themselves with this new full length. Machine Response veers in and out of pure speed, bursts of melody, and chunky tempo shifts, indenting the long standing influence of early 80s USHC, late 70s punk, and a peppering of 60s swagger, with their own clearly developed style. Dallas Good (Sadies, Andre Williams, John Doe, Half Japanese, Elevator and a million more) presents a magnificently essential 2nd guitar and lead presence; a screaming contribution by great friend and long time supporter of the band, Souichi Hisatake, (Forward, GISM, Insane Youth, Gudon etc.) to crack your brain up; artwork in collaboration with Ryan Tong of S.H.I.T. and Toronto's life-giving Faith/Void; and a thundering recording, once again helmed by the decorated and limitless in his pursuit of smooth hearing loss, Jon Drew, provide the most damaging clarity Career Suicide have been able to capture to date. Jeff Burke is one of the most distinctive songwriters in the punk rock underground, and these songs will sound instantly familiar to any fans of the aforementioned. Radioactivity's first LP was rightly hailed as a sort of sequel to The Marked Men's remarkable run through the first decade of the millennium, and while Silent Kill bears the unmistakable hallmarks of that band's tightly wound "Denton sound," Radioactivity can now lay claim to a sonic territory of their very own. Burke's distinctive hooks dig as deep as ever, but the scope of his vision has expanded. Although the twelve songs on Silent Kill abide one strict rule--providing garage punk pleasure at all costs--Radioactivity bend that mandate in myriad ways. Breathless ragers like "Battered" and "No Alarm" are as fleet and raw as anything in the combined canon of Radioactivity's members, while mid-tempo heartbreakers "Way Out," "Connection" and "Where I Come From" find Burke and company opening up their sound to let in a little tenderness. And then there are songs like "Not Here" or "With You," which enact perfect unions of melody and kinetic energy. Admirers of Burke's legacy will be not only satisfied, but pleasantly surprised. <image:title>Modern Life Is War - MODERN LIFE IS WAR</image:title>
<image:caption>We formed Modern Life Is War in early 2002 in our hometown of Marshalltown, Iowa. By the time we played our first show in our drummer’s parents basement on April 20th, 2002 we already had our self-released 7” in the works. We were very naive and didn’t know much about what we were about to get into. That summer we booked our own tour to the East Coast and back. The end of that tour was very likely to be the end of the band’s existence. However, by the time we got home it was clear that it was already taking on a life of it’s own and there was more work to be done. The beginnings of our band were completely DIY and homegrown and although many things have changed and progressed we always keep those early days in mind in everything we do. All aspects of Modern Life Is War remain very personal to us. We have released four full length albums: My Love. My Way. (2003), Witness (2005), Midnight in America (2007), and Fever Hunting (2013). Like all bands that have been around for some time, we have been through some shit. Broken Vans, breakups, reunions, injuries, tours, lineup changes, mental illness, peaks, valleys, misery and general confusion. This has been one of the most frustrating yet extremely rewarding things we have done with our lives. We value creativity, self-expression and independent thought and do our best to represent that with our music and our lyrics. Along the way we have developed a wildly supportive cult of supporters (thank you) who allow us to keep traveling and recording. We are currently battling it out in this mad world through a series of 7" singles we have titled “Tribulation Worksongs.” Volumes 1 & 2 came out in 2018 and 2019 will see the release of the next two volumes. Modern Life Is War is Jeffrey Eaton (vocals), Chris Honeck (bass), John Eich (Guitar), Luke Rauch (Drums) and Bo Becker (Guitar). Former members include: Matt Hoffman, Tyler Oleson, Sjarm 13 and Tim Churchman. Even as elderly people who don’t have many years left on this earth we still enjoy getting wild as hell and screaming and sweating on stages and floors around the world. Please come join us. <image:title>Bad Cop/Bad Cop - Bad Cop/Bad CoP</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s been a hectic couple of years since Los Angeles punk quartet Bad Cop/Bad Cop dropped their debut full-length, Not Sorry. The band spent a huge chunk of the intervening time on the road, like most bands do—and they wound up discovering some ugly things about themselves, like most bands do. Only for Bad Cop/Bad Cop, it got very serious, very quickly. “We were on the Fat Wreck Chords 25th anniversary tour in 2015, and Stacey was partying really hard,” says co-vocalist Jennie Cotterill. “She ended up bottoming out on the tour, and we had to leave. It was not a good separation. We had to go home and drop off the tour and figure out if we were still a band, what are we going to do about Stacey… Thankfully, Fat helped send her to detox, and she came out of that as a completely new person with a totally different trajectory. Before that, she was demonically possessed. She was destroying everything around her.” Out of that experience came “Amputations,” one of the highlights on Bad Cop/Bad Cop’s explosive second album, Warriors. The song is a slower, bigger sing-along than anything else in the band’s growing catalog, and it’s about the only thing not at a breakneck pace on the record. Many of the album’s most cathartic, aggressive moments come from the mind of co-vocalist Stacey Dee, who after going through the darkest time of her life has come out stronger than ever. Instead of focusing solely on her own issues, she was able to expand her horizons, writing songs as poignant as “Victoria” (about a friend’s child who committed suicide) and “Womanarchist” (in which Dee namedrops Revolutionary War heroine Nancy Morgan Hart and Joan of Arc while proclaiming she wants “to make the whole world feminist”). Dee explains much of her expanded worldview came in the wake of the 2016 presidential election, making Warriors one of the first punk albums written in the Trump era. “The election made a real big impact on us,” Dee says. “We were really hurt and really sad. It felt like we needed to take a stand and say something. I had never really dug into anything super-serious about fairness, equality or justice in my songwriting before. When my bandmates and I got a chance to rebuild together following my fall, it was all about honesty, celebrating our differences and letting our power come together naturally.” The foursome began recording immediately following a successful tour with the Interrupters last fall, spending roughly six weeks between Hurley Studios and Maple Sound Studios with their longtime collaborator and producer Davey Warsop between December 2016 and February 2017, with Jason Livermore (Descendents, Lagwagon) responsible for mixing and mastering—and just like on Not Sorry, Fat Wreck Chords founder Fat Mike chimed in with plenty of ideas as well. “When it comes to songwriting, I’m open to anyone offering ideas—I think that makes it cooler. I’m all about what sounds best. Mike had really great ideas—most of the time, I agreed with him,” Dee says with a laugh. That songwriting invitation extended within the band, too, as bassist Linh Le contributed two of Warriors’ finest moments, “I’m Done” and the title track. The former tackles the topic of gender-related microaggressions (“I felt instead of being passive-aggressive about it, I was just going to be aggressive,” Le says); the latter was written to pay homage to all who have devoted their lives to fight for equality and was inspired by the Trưng sisters, who led Vietnam’s rebellion against China nearly 2,000 years ago. Needless to say, there is more to Bad Cop/Bad Cop than your average punk band—and that’s how the women like it. “It is important to raise awareness,” Le says. “There are so many people we care about who feel stuck or afraid.” “We tend to stick up for the underdog,” Dee concludes. “It hurts us when anyone is marginalized. I was so negative for most of my life. After changing my life, I have been trying to focus on strength, connectedness and positivity. I think this record is a good start.” Homebase: Los Angeles, California Label: Fat Wreck Chords For avails and/or offers, contact: Brian@WIREDtourbooking.com</image:caption>

<image:title>The Bar Stool Preachers - The Bar stool preachers</image:title>
<image:caption>In a time when new punk bands have less and less to say, a bright light shines across the pond from Brighton, England. The Bar Stool Preachers are bringing back the essence of punk: music with a message. And do we ever need it in our world today! Defying genres, impossible to put in a box, challenging to the best of writers, this is a band you’ll want to interview rather than review. And B.S.P. are ready and waiting for your questions, excited to tell you of their intent, passions, goals and dreams. Whether you want to talk about their volunteer work, the political causes they hold dear to their hearts, or just hear about living in the most exciting and progressive town on the island, these boys are up for it! Although The Bar Stool Preachers are only just beginning as a band, their album is the perfect blend of intelligent punk anthems and poignant, unsentimental love songs, both combined with the most infectious music you’ll hear this decade. “Grazie Governo” (Italian for “Thank You, Government”) exemplifies this, as the tongue-in-cheek title is the first indication that The Bar Stool Preachers are wise beyond their years. But you get a full thirteen songs of hits on this record, no filler, with a different song rising to the top to be ‘your favourite’ on every listen. Yes, this album is that good. From the eclectic scene of punk and ska bands in the UK, The Bar Stool Preachers are a band for EVERYONE – a group of blue collar musicians who can instantly connect with anyone they play for. Exhibiting a tireless DIY work ethic that is unparalleled by its peers, the band has traveled the world gaining fans with engaging performances on the back of its critically acclaimed debut “Blatant Propaganda.” Frontman Tom McFaull has a storied musical lineage running through his veins. The son of Colin McFaull, singer of the legendary Cock Sparrer, he’s learned a lesson or two from his father. With this pedigree, the younger McFaull leads the charge for a new generation of punk bands with incomparable charisma and anger that cannot fail to impress. But their family is more than blood. Having Aimee Interrupter (The Interrupters) lending her voice on “Choose My Friends” and Pirates Press Records’ extended family (including Rancid, The Bouncing Souls, Dropkick Murphys and many others) in their corner, The Preachers are fortunate to have a wealth of experience and support to help lift them to their inevitable heights. They are also already famed for turning every show attendee, writer, photographer, interviewer and other band’s members into fast friends within minutes of meeting. Yes, they are that special. <image:title>Off With Their Heads - Off With Their Heads</image:title>
<image:caption>Off With Their Heads’ new album, Be Good, distinguishes itself from the rest of the band’s catalog with one very unique characteristic: It’s actually good. Frontman Ryan Young thinks so, anyway. “It’s the first record I’ve ever made that I like,” laughs Young. “Because there was no reason to make it anything other than what I wanted it to be.” The band has been relatively quiet over the last few years, largely because Young was tending to an ill family member who ultimately passed away last year. But through mourning came inspiration. “She was a photographer, and at the wake were all these photos she took,” he remembers. One of those photos struck him immediately. It shows a Mennonite family enjoying a sunny day at the beach while an ominous cooling tower looms in the background. “I said: That’s gonna be the cover of the album that doesn’t exist yet.” That photo captures the spirit of Be Good. While all of Off With Their Heads’ previous work shares a common thread of being rooted in Young’s fatalistic view of the world, Be Good at least allows a tiny glimmer of hope to peek through. “All the other records were about moping around and feeling sorry for yourself,” says Young. “This one is less about feeling sorry for yourself and more about accepting how goddamn miserable you are.” Forced acceptance is big theme of Be Good, though it’s a hard-learned one, often emerging in the form of primal screams in the band’s trademark style of gruff-punk. “Hands up to the sky and shout at the top of your lungs, til the floor falls out!” Young yells on the title track, sounding somewhere between motivational speaker and hard-nosed therapist. Much of the self-deprecation that defined the band’s previous work has been adjusted. It was the years spent out of the van, developing a life at home in Chicago, that gave Young his newfound, slightly more positive perspective. “Not being on the road 250 days a year, actually trying to develop some sort of life outside of playing shows and drinking, you’d be surprised what that does,” he says. “I’ve lost a bunch of weight, I’ve been going to a gym every day, trying not to kill myself all the time.” Young and the band members—bassist Robbie Smartwood, guitarist John Polydoros, and new drummer Kyle Manning—holed up for two and a half weeks at Pachyderm Studios, a mid-century mansion in Minnesota where Nirvana recorded In Utero, to make Be Good. Young produced the record himself, and it was the first time he enjoyed the process, or at least tolerated it. “I don’t like how the old records sound, and I hate recording so much,” he says. “You could just hear all the dumb shit on them where I was like, whatever, just let it go, I want to get out of here.” Be Good will be released by Epitaph Records on August 16 and, if ever there was a time for Ryan Young’s distinct brand on cautious optimism, it’s now. “The title is an answer to that question of what you’re supposed to do now that the world is so awful and the climate of this stupid country is so shitty,” he says. “Be good, be loud—that’s sometimes all you can do, I guess, as cheesy as that sounds.” Homebase: Chicago, Illinois Label: Epitaph Records For avails and/or offers, contact: Brian@WIREDtourbooking.com</image:caption>

<image:title>Team Dresch - team dresch</image:title>
<image:caption>To say Team Dresch were/are a political band is to miss the point. As they reminded in their great 1996 epistolary anthem “To the Enemies of Political Rock,” not singing about causes is a political statement, of acceptance of the status quo. In “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” America, Team Dresch did not have the luxury of complacency if they wanted to sing about the most basic of lyrical themes: Love. For four young women who love other women, choosing whether to sing their hearts out “can feel like a choice between pleasure and existence,” as Jody Bleyle evocatively expressed in “Political Rock.” Or, as they sang a little less politely in the same song: “Just own it you little slacker fuck.” Listening to Team Dresch’s 1990s albums and singles two decades later, I’m struck by the way in which they’ve gained, not lost, power. Combining the brazenness of Riot Grrrl with the angst dirge of grunge, Team Dresch didn’t just raise the stakes of queercore: They created two near-perfect albums about longing, freedom, and belonging over guitar riffs as epic and intense as Bleyle and Kaia Wilson’s poetic couplets. In the hands of Janis Ian or k.d. lang, or Tegan and Sara, songs like “She’s Crushing My Mind” and “Yes I am Too But Who Am I Really?” might have been ballads. Inspired by punk and metal, Team Dresch played them as bone crushers. Beginning with their self-naming, Team Dresch celebrated singularity and camaraderie. Guitarist and bassist Donna Dresch was the indie-rock legend (Screaming Trees, Dinosaur Jr., Fifth Column, etc.) under whose ax they united, but they carried the ball down the field together, passing lines, leads and instruments back and forth. They were all experienced musicians – Jody drummed for Hazel, Kaia had been in Adickdid, Marcéo Martinez in Calamity Jane – and brought a level of serious musicianship to the primitivism of Olympia’s DIY scene. On their 1995 debut, Personal Best (named after the movie starring Mariel Hemingway), they raged against the Christian right and small towns, then kissed their girlfriends on the mouth. Dresch, Bleyle, and Wilson played ferocious, intricate riffs fast while Martinez hit the drums hard. Their lyrics cited the Smiths and Sinead O’Connor, patron saints of sorrow and suffering. To paraphrase their own song, they were amazing; their words saved us. Melissa York replaced Martinez on Captain My Captain, pounding the skins even harder – and adding a level of NYC showmanship to the quintessentially Northwestern, T-shirted live act. “Uncle Phranc” kicked out the jams this time. The band was finding and creating community, elevating and becoming dykons. Already Team Dresch commanded a level of assurance and confidence, staying true to the underground’s autonomous spirit and dispensing useful advice, such as “Don’t Try Suicide.” They released their records on indie labels, mostly ones they ran themselves, Chainsaw and Candyass. “Remember who you are, Make up who you are,” they roared over the noise of busted closets. Punk rock would never be the same. Team Dresch broke up suddenly, its members going off in singles and pairs to other projects: The Butchies, the Vegas Beat. They reunited in 2004 and have played occasionally since, because music this honest never gets old. 2019 marks the first time they are flirting with the idea of being an active band again, look for more from Team Dresch as the year unfurls! <image:title>Bacchae - Bacchae</image:title>
<image:caption>Formed in 2016 by four friends with minimal experience as musicians, Bacchae make music with no assumptions about what a punk band should sound like. Underneath a careful balance of attitude and ambivalence, the quartet embraces heavy guitar riffs alongside bouncy pop melodies and rage-filled exclamations. Vocalist/keyboardist Katie McD, drummer Eileen O'Grady and guitarist Andrew Breiner began playing music together when they were enlisted as the backing band for a friend's experimental rock musical. Around the same time, Andrew met bassist Rena Hagins when they played together in a one-time band as part of Hat Band DC, a fundraiser for Girls Rock! DC. Together, they formed a new band called Bacchae. The band released a home-mixed demo in 2016, a self-released cassette, “Down the Drain,” in 2017, and a 2018 self-titled EP released on Get Better Records. The new LP “Pleasure Vision” will be available on vinyl through Get Better Records in March 2020. Bacchae have found a home in the DC punk community, even as their music mixes styles and jumps between genres when the mood suits them. On their new LP, “Pleasure Vision,” brooding synth-driven pop sits alongside prickly, fast-paced punk and spooky post-punk sounds. Sometimes you get all of that in a single song. Whether the band is exploring the pain of a doomed relationship or the push and pull of disgust and desire while shopping online, what carries through it all is a sense of uncertainty, dissolution and dread. “Pleasure Vision” is a way of looking at the world that ignores everything but how you can twist it to your own purposes. It’s a vision that’s well-suited to a time when everything and everyone is supposed to be for sale. As the inkblots on the cover imply, this is an album about what you project onto what you see, not the things themselves. It’s about the distance between what you say, what you think you want, and what you actually want. <image:title>Dark Thoughts - Dark Thoughts</image:title>
<image:caption>"Dark Thoughts, one of the few pop-punk bands it’s OK for hardcore folks to like." Dark Thoughts: Must Be Nice 12” (Stupid Bag) Dark Thoughts’ 3rd LP is out, and I think it’s their best one yet. If you heard the first two, this one is a little different, with less of a stylized, Ramones-influenced sound. There are very few bells and whistles (except for the literal bells on the climactic closing track), and an apparently simple formula: take some smart and heartfelt lyrics, find a 3 or 4-chord progression that goes along with their tone, and bash it out as power chords with Ramones-style drums playing at an appropriate tempo (mid-paced to super fast, depending on the tone). For most bands, that would be a fast track to a bunch of generic and boring songs, but for Dark Thoughts the minimal ornamentation highlights how great these songs are. The lyrics give me all the feels (as the kids were saying in the not-too-distant past), and every track has the fist-pumping, energetic and anthemic sound that makes Dark Thoughts one of the few pop-punk bands it’s OK for hardcore folks to like. The overall tone and vibe is similar to what I consider the peak period of Screeching Weasel, i.e. their run of LPs from My Brain Hurts through How to Make Enemies and Irritate People, but if you whittled those records down to the faster, darker tracks like “Hanging Around,” “The Science of Myth,” “Every Night,” etc. Like most of the individual tracks, the LP is short, but it's such a thrilling listen that I often play it a few times in a row, something I rarely do with other records. I’ve been playing Must Be Nice since the digital version first went online back in December, and it shows no signs of leaving the “current listening” pile any time soon. - Daniel Lupton, Sorry State Records Homebase: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Label: Stupid Bag Records and Drunken Sailor (UK) For avails and/or offers, contact: Brian@WIREDtourbooking.com</image:caption>

<image:title>City Of Caterpillar - City Of Caterpillar</image:title>
<image:caption>20 years is a long time between records. Few people know that better than the members of City Of Caterpillar, who are about to release their second album two decades after their first. When guitarist/vocalist Brandon Evans, guitarist Jeff Kane, drummer Ryan Parrish and bassist/vocalist Kevin Longendyke unveiled their self-titled debut in 2002, their emotional, frenzied and often cinematic music was at the vanguard of the burgeoning screamo movement. Along with bands like Pg.99 (with whom they shared members), Majority Rule, Planes Mistaken For Stars and others, they helped develop a style of music that took hardcore into convulsive new territory. Though they received their share of accolades, City Of Caterpillar often played in small venues to modest crowds. It’s only in hindsight that their legend has grown. “We didn’t get that much attention back then,” Evans acknowledges. “But the whole scene was cool. It was tight, it was a community, but it’s not like it was big. People got exposed to us afterwards, when the Internet blew up. It became like a cult thing.” When City Of Caterpillar decided to play a reunion show in 2016, they figured they’d do something low-key in their hometown of Richmond, VA. Due to overwhelming demand, that show became an East Coast tour. Followed by a European tour. Followed by a Japanese tour. “We thought we’d do a show in Virginia and our friends would come,” Evans recalls. “When it turned into all this other stuff, it made me feel like the time and energy we put into this when we started was worth more than I ever could have known. We had no idea people cared.” After years spent living in other parts of the country and playing in other bands—including Darkest Hour, Malady and Ghastly City Sleep—all four members were back in Richmond. Sure enough, the reunion shows snowballed into writing sessions. “We were having fun being around each other and making music again,” Evans explains. “What never changed is that we’re all still friends. We still enjoy similar music, though we’ve grown our palettes for sure. It became this challenge of, ‘Can we make something that would be just as impactful 20 years later and not feel redundant?’” The answer is a resounding yes. City Of Caterpillar’s new album, Mystic Sisters, recaptures the magic of old while taking the band’s music into exciting new territory. “We’ve all been working on our craft, even though we weren’t a band for many years,” Kane says. “It feels a lot more focused and intentional than it was back in the day. Now we know how to play better and construct songs better, so this is the next step for us. We’re not doing it as a retro kind of thing.” Tracked primarily at Montrose Recording in Richmond, Mystic Sisters was self-produced by the band and then mixed and mastered by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Bosse-de-Nage). “In the big picture, we’re trying to be deeper about our emotional choices within tones, textures, lyrics and vocals,” Evans explains. “But we’re trying to keep that energetic, youthful rawness. The idea is to make it show that 20 years have passed, but also make it seem like this record could’ve come out right after the other one.” Of all the songs on Mystic Sisters, lead single “Decider” probably has the most in common with City Of Caterpillar circa 2002. Which makes sense, given that its lyrical content revolves around some of the band’s old friends and tour mates who have since passed. “It’s basically about Planes Mistaken For Stars, and Gared [O’Donnell] having cancer and dying and Matt [Bellinger] dying. Ryan came up with the concept and I helped him flesh it out. It’s about waking up one day, looking around and thinking, ‘Where did everybody go?’ You’re getting more and more alone as you get older. But Gared sparked it. We actually dedicated the record to him and Planes.” The winding and atmospheric title track embodies City Of Caterpillar’s experimental side and features some noise violin from Evans’ former Pg. 99 bandmate Johnny Ward. “With this song, we’re creating longer dynamics and prettier parts within the spastic-ness,” he says. “It’s probably what people consider the ‘post-rock’ side of us. The song is a journey, though—you can get lost, come back, get lost and come back over and over. There’s a lot of texture and synth stuff, along with Johnny’s violin in the background. Lyrically, it’s about tapping into the ancient energy of the past and about how in the end we’re all more connected than we could ever know.” The album’s second song, “Paranormaladies,” combines a supernatural experience with a nod to one of his bandmates’ other projects. “It’s about ghosts,” Evans says. “My stepdad came back to me once. I put on his shirt one day after I moved back to Richmond, and I just started feeling his presence. I also think the song has kind of a Malady vibe, the band that Jeff and Kevin and others were in after City of Caterpillar.” Ultimately, City of Caterpillar are more concerned with creating a mood than telling a story. “The band is always focused on mood,” Evans confirms. “To me, that’s the most important thing. I don’t really want people dissecting what we’re trying to say, because it’s not really about us. It never has been. What we cared about 20 years ago was innocent, raw emotion, and that’s what we care about now.” Homebase: Richmond, Virginia Label: Relapse Records For avails and/or offers, contact: Joe@WIREDtourbooking.com</image:caption>

<image:caption>Colleen Green is a DIY singer-songwriter and visual artist from Lowell, MA. Following the release of her classic debut album "Milo Goes to Compton" in 2010, Green started to make a name for herself in the lo-fi bedroom pop scene of Los Angeles. She soon became known in punk circles across the country for performing alone on stage with nothing more than a drum machine, a pair of sunglasses, and her iconic electric guitar. In September of that same year, Green signed with Seattle-based Hardly Art Records, a subsidiary of the legendary Sub Pop label, and went on to release 2015's "I Want to Grow Up" which brought her international renown and critical acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and the New York Times. Following the success of this album, the readers of LA Weekly voted her Best Solo Act of 2015. Green's pride and joy is the full-album cover of Blink 182's Dude Ranch that she released in 2019. The recording has since become beloved by fans of both acts and even led to a guest appearance on Mark Hoppus's Apple Music radio show. She has performed in 20 countries including Brazil, Chile, Japan, Italy, Spain, Poland, Czechia, and Norway. The past 10+ years have seen Green continue to grow, learn, and improve, and she hopes to keep following that trajectory indefinitely by staying cool, being nice, and believing in love. <image:title>Rozwell Kid - Rozwell Kid</image:title>
<image:caption>Fronted by the affable, spectacled Jordan Hudkins, Rozwell Kid write massive, gritty, excitable power-punk songs; they channel Blue Album guitar grandiosity and eternally-hummable melodies conveyed in ‘ooo”s, the likes of which would make Rivers Cuomo weak in his problematic knees. But when it came to writing Rozwell Kid’s new album, Precious Art, Jordan Hudkins found himself in the strange place of wondering who and what Rozwell Kid actually was. After more than two years on the road, the band – completed by guitarist Adam Meisterhans, bassist/vocalist Devin Donnelly and drummer Sean Hallock – hadn’t quite hit a dead end, but they needed to regroup, rethink and refind their identity. All of those questions are thankfully answered by the twelve songs that make up Precious Art. It is a quintessential Rozwell Kid album and something entirely new at the same time. It’s teeming with understated nostalgia, but doesn’t get too lost in the past. Rather, it recalibrates the past, revisiting it with the added wisdom that comes with age. It’s quirky in the way that Rozwell Kid songs have always been quirky, but more than any other record the band has made, it sees Hudkins diving deep into the heart of human existence, telling universal truths based on his own personal memories and unexamined experiences. “Nostalgia has always been part of my inspiration for songwriting,” admits Hudkins. “I’ve always seemed to pull from childhood memories and recontextualized them, where I kind of imagine it as a big 30 year-old kid wearing OshKosh B’Gosh overalls singing about these things they experienced or thought about as a kid.” The result is an album that expands the strain of weird whimsy that’s always run through the band’s songs, but on which it’s increasingly difficult to ignore the more serious side of things. Nothing illustrates that more than the song “Booger.” Yes, it’s an amusing tale that revolves around the green stuff that comes out of your nose being smeared across the screen of your smartphone, but it’s also so much more than that – it’s a tender, touching and even tragic ode to lost love, that is filled with an audibly sad beauty. This album also marks a new frontier in how the four members were able to write songs; having ample time in the studio allowed the band to be more experimental, and to collaborate in an entirely new way. But it’s remarkability is as much because of Hudkins’ insane ability to balance pathos and humor to turn the slightest, most oddball detail – whether that’s picking his nose, making Batman costumes or liking hummus – into works of, well, precious art. <image:title>Rodeo Boys - Rodeo Boys</image:title>
<image:caption>On their Don Giovanni debut, Home Movies, Rodeo Boys are upping the ante. Their music owes as much to the twang of country as it does to the fuzz of grunge, and it’s a winning combination. Lead single “Sugar” sits somewhere between Bully and SPICE, a gritty slice of feedback-drenched rock ‘n’ roll that immediately makes it clear where Rodeo Boys’ passions lie–in loud, crunchy, catchy alt rock. “Dog Leg” plays out like a supersized take on classic rock, all roaring solos and guttural hooks, and epic closer “Tomboy Radio” is a proggy masterclass in dynamics. Home Movies hardly lets up all through its 40 minutes, the space folk of “Hail Mary” allowing a couple minutes to breathe, but it all seems to zip by. Vocalist Tiff Hannay says Rodeo Boys’ goal as a queer blue-collar band is “to give a voice to young queer people in small towns,” and what a powerful voice it is. Hailing from Santa Barbara, California, the band's original lineup consisted of Jason Sears (vocals), Chris Rest (guitar), Richard "Bomer" Manzullo (drums), and Vinx Peppars (bass). RKL quickly gained a reputation for their high-energy live performances and intricate songs. Barry Ward joined the band in 1985 preceding the recording of the album, "Rock and Roll Nightmare." Bass player, Joe Raposo joined the band in 1986 elevating their musicianship and live performances to new levels. Throughout the '80s and '90s, RKL toured extensively and released influential albums such as "Keep Laughing" (Mystic), "Rock N Roll Nightmare" (Alchemy), and "Riches to Rags" (Epitaph) with the introduction of Dave Raun on Drums. They became known for blending punk, thrash, and classic metal into their blistering music. Their eclectic sound set them apart in the punk landscape, earning them a dedicated fanbase. After a period of hiatus in the late '90s, RKL made a reappearance with Chris Flippin (guitar) and Derrick Plourde (drums). Richard "Bomer" Manzullo passed away in Dec 2005. Jason Sears passed away in January 2006. In 2024, with an unexpected reformation, veterans Dave Raun, Chris Rest, Joe Raposo, and Barry Ward are joined by vocalist, Tony Foresta, known for his work with Municipal Waste. Foresta's distinctive vocals have injected new life into RKL's dynamic fusion of punk and thrash. <image:title>Eddie Pepitone - Eddie Pepitone</image:title>
<image:caption>They call him the Bitter Buddha, comedian Eddie Pepitone is a master of the dark art of comedy. Hailed as a modern day cross between Jackie Gleason, Don Rickles and Eckart Tolle. Eddie is a force of nature on stage, switching between social rage and self-doubt. His shows are an energetic combo of calm and chaos, blue-collar angst and sardonic enlightenment. Few comedians working today channel the power of the rant better than Eddie Pepitone. His most recent stand-up special For the Masses was released in June 2020, which the New York Times listed as one of the best stand-up specials of 2020. In 2014, Eddie released In Ruins, his first stand-up that was shot at The Bell House in Brooklyn, NY. In addition to his regular stand-up shows, Eddie is a stand-out comic/character actor. Beginning in New York City’s improv/sketch scene (where he quickly became a regular face), and continuing on to recurring roles on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and appearances on WTF with Marc Maron Podcast. Most recently, Eddie can be seen in Max's Haley Quinn spin-off Kite Man, Hell Yea! and Hulu's Ramy. Eddie has also appeared on numerous comedy TV shows, including Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Rick and Morty, Reno 911!, 10 Year Old Tom, The Life and Times of Tim, Will & Grace, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Love, The Sarah Silverman Program, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Last Comic Standing, Chappelle’s Show, appearances on Bob’s Burgers, and he’s a regular on Adult Swim’s Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell. Fans also might recognize Pepitone from his role in the hit comedy Old School, where he plays the role of 'Archer', one of the recruiting pledges. Eddie is the host of the podcast "Apocalypse Soon", which includes an assortment of original characters, ranting, raving and all the things you come to love from Eddie Pepitone. <image:title>Underdog - Underdog</image:title>
<image:caption>UNDERDOG Chemistry is everything. Mixing different elements together can make something explosive happen or, on the other hand, nothing at all. The band Underdog was an example of such an experiment, with a lifespan shorter than expected, but with powerful aftereffects that still linger on. The two key, constant elements of Underdog during its span of four years were Richie Birkenhead (vocals) and Russ "Wheeler" Iglay (bass) who decided to form a band while talking at CBGB in 1985. The band, named True Blue for about a week, soon became Underdog. These two NYHC matinee regulars and longtime skateboarders, Richie and Russ, were indeed at opposite ends of the spectrum in temperament and circles they ran in. Case in point: Richie did time with Youth of Today and Russ with Murphy's Law. Underdog was also one of the first punk bands with deep roots in skateboarding, and skating still remains a focal point in the life of the band. Richie, while fronting Underdog, raised the bar in NYHC during those years, in a scene filled with aggro, straight-up hardcore bands that concentrated more on athletic than vocal prowess and melody on stage. He prowled the stage, commandeered the crowd and could switch from a guttural scream to the voice of a choir boy in a split second. Russ, well known for his Andy Capp, drink-up, devil-may-care, knuckle-up persona equaled Richie in the stage presence department, swinging off ceiling pipes and taunting the crowd all while keeping the rhythm section tightly pumping with kid brother Dean Joseph (Iglay, stolen from Jersey Shore pranksters Good Humor), who replaced original drummer Gregg very early on and remained a permanent member. Underdog became a hugely popular musical hybrid capable of playing shows with any other band while winning new followers along the way. Their "fuck with our friends and you fuck with us" attitude wasn't just a bullshit theme for a song like lots of other bands. These guys practiced what they preached. The band's attitude on stage encouraged everyone in the crowd to let loose and go nuts without fear of getting sucker-punched or bullied by anyone. And they did. Underdog shows were sweat-drenched, hard-dancing, sing-along events for everyone involved. Their first 7" EP released on New Beginnings Records (with Gregg Pierce on drums and Danny Darella on guitar) instantly became a hot commodity in the NYHC scene, spread through the U.S. and was quickly out of print. The legendary Matt Solomon cover art became the unofficial trademark for the band on T-shirts, flyers and tattoos, on the power of that 7" alone. While Richie, Russ and Dean remained fixtures (except for Richie's brief departure to play for Youth of Today on one album/tour [vocal duties were briefly taken over by Carl DiMola]), guitar players were to Underdog what drummers were to Spinal Tap. Original guitarist Danny was later replaced by Arthur (Token Entry, Gorilla Biscuits), who was subsequently replaced by skater dude Chuck. For the recording of the Over the Edge demo, and also at the tail-end of their existence, Underdog played as a trio, with Richie on guitar. Already quite aware of Underdog and after hearing their 1988 Over the Edge demo, Caroline Records signed the band to record what became the album The Vanishing Point. The band had matured into an extremely tight musical unit, mixing the best of power, melody and even reggae into a volatile mix second only to Bad Brains. Chuck Treece joined the band on guitar to help record the songs already written by Richie and Russ. Recorded in one week at Electric Reels in upstate NY and produced by Don Fury, The Vanishing Point was one of the most anxiously awaited records of the year. A 1989 nationwide tour to support the record was their biggest and most successful at that point and there seemed to be nothing standing in their way. Sadly prophetic, the title of the record rang true at the conclusion of that tour. Arriving back in NYC and dropping off Richie, Russ and Dean drove home for an agreed upon short break. That short break became a long break and they decided to cancel their European tour. Playing a few shows a year since '98 these days it's the original core lineup, Dean, Richie and Russ with friend and Floorpunch member Marc (Zev) Zeveney as a full-time member of Underdog on guitar. In 2010, Bridge Nine packaged up the band's entire recorded output and issued it as Matchless, offering a comprehensive look at their catalog, as well as a Matchless: Visual Outtakes book which showcases all of the letters, photographs, flyers and other media that couldn't fit on the album's layout. <image:title>Chris Farren - Chris Farren</image:title>
<image:caption>Ask Chris Farren how he feels when he finishes an album and he won’t hesitate to respond with: “Miserable. Miserable. Miserable.” At least, that’s how it’s been over the years he’s been writing and recording solo. When the time came to make a record, Farren would be overtaken by an unparalleled anxiety, forcing him into the home studio he describes as “barely bigger than a closet,” where he agonized over the minute details of his work in progress. “Looking back on those records… I have no good memories of making them,” he admits. “It’s always been a lonely, doubt-ridden process.” It’s surprising to hear this, knowing Farren’s reputation as a prolific songwriter who made his name recording with Jeff Rosenstock in Antarctigo Vespucci and before that, the Floridian punk band Fake Problems. In 2014, Farren started releasing music under his own name all while continuing his project alongside Rosenstock, and his first album, Like a Gift From God or Whatever endeared him to fans of the now-defunct Fake Problems and new listeners who had yet to experience the delight of a new Chris Farren song. Like a Gift From God or Whatever was followed by Can’t Die and Farren’s Polyvinyl debut, Born Hot. Last year, Farren wrote what he describes as a soundtrack to a spy film he invented that will never be committed to film. Inspired by Marvin Gaye’s soundtrack to Trouble Man, Death Don’t Wait (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) was a creative exercise, one Farren completed in mere months that stands apart from the extensive, at times arduous, process of making a Chris Farren album. After releasing Born Hot in 2019, Farren knew he needed to make changes to the creative process, but he wasn’t yet sure how to. Enter Frankie Impastato, drummer of Macseal, who Farren met on tour and who became one of his dearest friends and confidants. He told Impastato about the misery, the barely-bigger-than-a-closet studio, the barren memory chest, and together they hatched a plan: they’d make Farren’s next album together. So, Farren got in touch with multi-instrumentalist/ producer, and Jay Som mastermind, Melina Duterte (also a Polyvinyl labelmate), who invited him by her studio where she’s collaborated with a steady stream of notable artists since first opening it in 2020. That’s where Doom Singer, his new full-length album due out August 4th, would be made. “Looking back, I feel bad, because Melina brought me in to show me her space and was describing the gear to me and I was totally checked out,” Farren says. “I mean, the space is amazing, she’s super talented, but I told her: ‘I don’t care about any of this stuff. I just want to make a record with you and have fun. I want to make a record and have a good time.’” Collaboration not only untethered Farren from his misery (fun was had) but also his overbearing need to control every aspect of the creative process. While on previous albums like 2019’s Born Hot or 2016’s Can’t Die Farren might’ve spent hours on end tweaking a single canned drumbeat, Impastato’s live drums offer a spontaneity that breathed new dimensionality into the Chris Farren project. He wanted this new effort to be “bombastic,” to sound like it could fill the immense negative space of an arena. “I wanted to open these songs up, make them less frenetic, and not feel the pressure to cram every moment,” he says. You hear that impulse on lead single “Cosmic Leash,” which opens with a wall of sound that careens to a halt, as Farren delivers his interlude over the slight strumming of a guitar. That sense of reprieve lasts only a moment, before the enormous chorus shreds through the silence as Farren wails: “Change your heart/ Wait your turn.” The choruses on Doom Singer are all like this, huge, cathartic, catchy as hell, and inspired by what Farren describes as the “sixties-tinged girl group vibe, not retro, but playful” employed by Belle and Sebastian. “First Place” is a shining example, a song Farren describes as being about worrying you might grow apart from your partner and, “Not being able to cum because of Lexapro.” It’s hard to describe the single as anything but “jaunty,” the buoyancy of Farren’s delivery belying any sense of disquiet humming beneath its surface. Farren says Doom Singer communicates an “optimistic nihilism,” and that lyrically, he’s trying to embrace nuances inspired by films like TÁR and I’m Thinking of Ending Things. “In these movies, the truth of the narrative isn’t handed to you, and it’s not easy to figure out where your sympathies should lie,” he says. Against certainty, Doom Singer opens with a confession. “I don’t remember how to do this,” Farren croons on “Bluish,” admitting to feeling codependent in his marriage, worried he is too much to manage, that his neuroses might disrupt a delicate domestic balance. It was the first song he wrote for the album and the one that determined its narrative course. We’re made to believe aging makes you wiser, but as Farren has grown into the prodigious songwriter you hear on Doom Singer, he’s only grown less certain. “I’m constantly processing the way I feel about things, and I didn’t want any of these songs to sound sure of themselves, or to communicate any clear message,” he says. Citing My Bloody Valentine, TV on the Radio, and Camera Obscura as clear influences, Farren says he can’t listen to much music until it’s time to make a new record, but when it’s time, he submerges himself in music that moves him. “I wrote between fifty and eighty songs for this album,” he says. The final cut is as genuine, empathetic, and of course, funny, as Farren is, and though he claims nihilistic tendencies, it’s the dogged optimism that endures. On “All We Ever,” Farren compiles a list of things he wants (to stop paying rent, to love the government, to get drunk with friends) that accumulate into a three-minute reminder that no life is ever pristine, that there will always be wants unfulfilled, and that that’s okay. “There will be struggle in everything. I’ll always be fighting with myself, and I need to find a certain peace with that,” he says, but on Doom Singer, Farren rejects closure, and he’s still seeking that sense of peace. Maybe we all are, whether we’re bold enough to sing about it or not. <image:caption>TV Smith was founder member, singer and songwriter for the Adverts, who formed in late 1976, and were one of the leading bands in the first wave of British punk rock. In early 1977, they performed regularly at the newly-opened Roxy Club in London, and gained cult success with the Stiff Records single "One Chord Wonders." Their next release, "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" became a hit record, leading to radio and TV appearances and extensive media interest. A further single, “No Time To Be 21,” also entered the charts, and the band spent the rest of the year playing live, including major tours with The Damned and Iggy Pop. The album that followed in early 1978, "Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts," is still considered a genuine classic of the era and is often cited as one of the twenty best punk albums ever released. As live music finally started up again in 2022 after the initial landing of the Coronavirus, TV wasted no time in getting back to work. As well as numerous solo club dates, he supported on major tours with Stiff Little Fingers, the Damned and Ruts DC, and continued into 2023 with more touring in the UK, Europe, and the U.S.A. From time to time he gathers a crack team of fellow musicians around him to tour with a full band, as TV Smith’s Adverts in the U.S.A. <image:title>Restorations - Restorations</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s been six long years since Restorations put out an album, and they’re ready to do it again. The self-titled Restorations will be self-released on March 22nd. Like their four previous full-length albums, Restorations is a mirror held up to the band’s life. But more than this, it’s a reinvention of Restorations. Even as it treads familiar ground—Restorations is and always will be a loud guitar band—Restorations crackles and vibrates with urgency and momentum. It feels like a machine whose pieces have all tightened into place, finally churning at full, furious speed. It’s the sound of five friends recommitting themselves to their band, to each other, and to the things that have always made sense: guitars, keys, bass, drums, and vocals crashing against one another in thunderous, beautiful release. Jon Loudon (vocals/guitars), Dave Klyman (guitars/vocals), Dan Zimmerman (bass/vocals), Bean Friend (keys/guitars), and Jeff Meyers (drums/percussion) began work on Restorations four years ago. With the band spread between Philly, Asheville, and Buffalo, they scheduled time for long-form practice sessions at Philadelphia’s Retro City Studios and Gradwell House Recording in New Jersey. The sessions were intentional. With only so much time together, the band began writing in a more purposeful and concentrated way, and the time off between each provided the time to work and rework the arrangements. There were no deadlines or tours or contractual obligations to fulfill. When they were ready to hit record at Retro City—Klyman engineering—the focus was exclusively on creating sounds that felt exciting and fun for them alone. It was designed from the start to sound exactly like what it is: five longtime friends in a room together, reconnecting on a near molecular level about what it means to make unbridled, life-affirming noise. It’s unsurprising to listen to the album and find what came of this approach: monumental choruses, flurries of distorted guitars and soaring leads, keyboard interludes, the feel of a band striking gold in a frigid garage somewhere and grinning at one another. It’s a big, dumb rock album. (The title of midway track “Big, Dumb” might just be a wink.) But Restorations feels considered and careful even in its gleeful abandon. It counts nine tracks of loud, jubilant guitar music that feel immediate and intimate, just like the sessions that produced them. Lead single “Cured” is the first taste, booting up with a squeal of feedback and hulking, aggressive chords before Zimmerman’s grease-slicked bass and Meyers’ drums take the reins. Then Loudon’s voice rips through the room: “God only answers to say ‘no,’” he roars, his raw belt as clear and powerful as it's ever been. Effected guitar leads combust, fall apart, and steam back into view throughout; all the while, that enormous bass and those relentless drums pound forward. It’s vintage Restorations, calling up a feeling you can find across their work. There are flickers of chaos at the edges of most Restorations songs. Part of that comes from Loudon’s trademark man-on-the-brink tenor and his razor-sharp lyricism; other times, like on the major-key madhouse “This Guy Does Not Remember You,” it’s a team effort. But there are moments of spareness and reflection, too. The aforementioned “Big, Dumb” opens with rippling, sunny keys from Friend, even as glitches and modulations lurk in the background; “800,” too, leans on Friend’s organ for richness and control. The outro of closer “Charm” shakes down the heavens under a choir of interspersed vocals. This album wasn’t easy to make. The members of Restorations are getting older, and their lives are changing. They’re crossing the threshold of 40 as the band nears 16 years together, and creating this LP humbled them. It’s probably because of that fact, and not in spite of it, that they’ve produced their most thrilling and vital album to date. Restorations demonstrates the fullness that time, care, and camaraderie can bring to a creative endeavor. Put more plainly: making music with your best friends is still good, and always will be. <image:title>Dosser - Dosser</image:title>
<image:caption>Over the past decade, it’s become increasingly in vogue for bands to pay lip service to 90s alt rock, but many of them capture only the most surface level cosmetic elements, missing the critical components that defined that decade’s underground scene. A chorus pedal, a Big Muff, and a flannel don’t go far on their own merits. To put it bluntly, many groups fundamentally do not “get it”. But Baltimore, MD’s Dosser absolutely does. Where many of their contemporaries are little more than thinly-veiled pop punk acts doing retro cosplay, Dosser gets at the core of what made 90s guitar rock such a compelling force. From leads that hearken back to early Weezer, massive riffs that evoke Jawbox, and razor-sharp pop-rock sensibilities that bring to mind the Foo Fighters’ debut LP, this is a band synthesizing the best parts of various forms into their own potent formula. Formed in the summer of 2018 by Will Teague, Bret Lanahan, Eric Dudley, and Max Detrich, Dosser’s debut LP finds a band playing at a level well beyond what their short lifespan might suggest. Coming out on Really Rad Records in January 2023, Violent Picture / Violent Sound is about as strong an opening volley as it gets. <image:caption>Riderless Horse is my first solo record, and it’s the first record my former partner, Kennan Gudjonsson, didn’t produce. I haven’t made an album since 2010. I decided to stop pursuing music several years after my sixth record, Outlaster, because of unhappiness, overwhelming chaos, mental illness, and my tragically dysfunctional relationship with Kennan. Creating music had always been a positive outlet during difficult times, but eventually it became a source of absolute misery. Kennan, a cat, and I lived in a studio apartment in NYC for 25 years, finding ways to survive while making records and going on tours. Our apartment was the place where people would come stay, eat, drink, play music, and use our tub. It was quite a home we had created, but it was decaying steadily from the moment we moved in, and in the end, it was as if black mold was growing beneath the surface, undetected, and the two of us were dying and getting too weak to ever leave. We loved each other. We were each other’s family, but there was ongoing abuse, control and manipulation. We hid. We didn’t want anyone to see how ugly things could get, so we increasingly isolated from our friends and family. We were lost. On January 26, 2020, I made the decision to separate and live apart, and on January 27, Kennan died by suicide. What a thing, suicide. I can only feel sadness and guilt about it. Maybe I’ll have other reactions to it later on. Riderless Horse documents the grief, but it also marks moments of empowerment and a real happiness in discovering my own capability. Steve Albini produced this record with me, and Greg Norman assisted. The three of us are old friends, and we did a field recording in a guesthouse built like a lighthouse that two very dear friends of mine have in Esopus, NY. It was exactly the right environment to work on this record. We all had meals together, cried, laughed, and told stories. It was perfect. It made me realize how much I love writing, playing and recording music. Terrible things happen. These were some terrible things. So, what to do – learn something valuable, connect with people, move the fuck out of that apartment, remember the humor, find the humor, tell the truth, and make a record. I made a record. <image:title>Toys That Kill - toys that kill</image:title>
<image:caption>Toys That Kill come from San Pedro, California, the city where the freeway ends, where bullets fall from the sky on the fourth of July and where Mike Watt painted the name of his hometown on his bass and everybody started calling him “Pedro.” While it wouldn’t fit Todd Congelliere's genre or personality to start chucking around words like “expert,” Todd and Toys have exactly figured out how to make a couple chords and a chorus timeless in a way that’s old and new all at once. Congelliere was at the core of F.Y.P, the band he started basically with the lowest-budget drum machine and four-track recorder legally available in 1989 after sudden and intense exposure to punk by fellow skaters who’d come by to use his ramp and bring mixtapes for the boombox. (“Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, 7 Seconds, the Germs, Descendents—if it wasn’t for those bands, not only would we not sound like this, I probably wouldn’t be involved with music,” he says now. “I’ve always hated normal musicians and these bands were nothing like that.”) When he started FYP , it was hardcore, but in the loosest sense—fast, pissed, aimed squarely against a world of teachers and cops and full-of-themselves idiots. But there was more going on, too—Minutemen- style wordcram and Descendents-esque melody snarled together with pitch-dark humor and strangely sentimental sarcasm, and by the summer of 2000, it was obvious that the band called F.Y.P was ready to become something else. So naturally, they did, playing the last F.Y.P show for hundreds of proud screaming weirdos in a cavernous bar in the Inland Empire and debuting the new deal at a since-bulldozed punk club in the shadow of the Port of Los Angeles the very next night. And so—the same way the Descendents changed into All—began the mighty Toys That Kill. If you were there, you could tell this band was everything ex-F.Y.P-ers Congelliere and Sean Cole (now twinning Congelliere on guitar and vocals) had been saving up ever since. These were gigantic songs with choruses as heart-stopping as the Clash and a rhythm section—bassist Chachi Ferrara, drummer Jimmy Felix—so heavy it sank further into the stage every time the drums kicked in. (This is called the “TTK thump,” says Congelliere.) Toys had pop songs but pop songs broken at the edges, rock ‘n’ roll songs but rock ‘n’ roll songs with all the pose and pretension dissolved away, punk songs but punk songs that weren’t ever gonna burn out and crumble away. And so Toys That Kill revealed themselves as a band that could translate Thin Lizzy and the Buzzcocks, Cheap Trick and the Descendents, the Replacements and the Who and Elvis Costello and the Ramones all down to the same simple things—energy, guitar and heart. <image:caption>F.Y.P (aka Five Year Plan) was former World Industries/Liberty pro-skater Todd Congelliere's rock and pop-punk band from San Pedro, CA. The group began in 1989 as a one man band with a cheap Fisher Price drum machine providing the beat. F.Y.P gained notoriety in the DIY punk scene for touring the world several times before disbanding in 1999. Todd Congelliere has been steadily releasing records of his own and of similarly minded individuals via his Recess Records imprint. Todd C’s releases may be the highlight though; between F.Y.P.’s early bratty punk, to the more mature melodicism of The Underground Railroad to Candyland, Toys that Kill (named for a F.Y.P album), Clown Sounds, and even a band with Mike Watt called Jumpstarted Plowhards, Congelliere’s pop sensibility has only blossomed with age, churning out more and more memorable records as the years have rolled on. In 2012, original members Congelliere and Sean Cole with two other members of Toys That Kill, bassist Casey (Chachi) Ferrara and drummer Mike "Jimmy Jackets" Felix, reunited as F.Y.P. <image:title>Juanita and Juan - Juanita and Juan</image:title>
<image:caption>Juanita and Juan is a dynamic musical duo formed by Alice Bag and Kid Congo Powers, two influential figures in the punk and alternative music scenes who first crossed paths in 1977 during the early days of the Hollywood punk movement. Their friendship, rooted in a shared passion for raw, boundary-pushing music, has led to a new creative partnership that transcends genres and defies labels, although the two refer to their sound as “Loud Lounge.” Alice Bag, a founding member of the pioneering punk band the Bags, is known for her fierce stage presence and unapologetic, feminist approach to punk music. She has spent decades championing the voices of women in rock and advocating for social justice, both through her music and activism. Kid Congo Powers, an original member of The Gun Club and a key player in The Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, as well as his own band, Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds, brings his audacious blend of noisy, psych-infused rock with a touch of glam. His unique guitar playing and distinctive style have made him a beloved figure in underground music circles. Together, Juanita and Juan blend their influences—Bag's fiery vocals and penchant for dark melody with Powers’ atmospheric, reverb-laden guitar tones—creating a musical landscape that is both nostalgic and fresh-sounding. Their collaboration captures the adventurous spirit of their punk roots while embracing new sonic territory. The duo’s chemistry is undeniable, with their musical partnership serving as both a testament to their enduring friendship and the spirit of musical exploration that began for the pair in 1976, proving that punk is not just a genre, but a lasting, ever-evolving attitude. <image:caption>Since forming in 2013, No Time has carved out their place in the underground, blending the gritty authenticity of UK Oi! with the raw intensity of early American hardcore. Their sound is raw, catchy, fierce, and unmistakably their own—uncompromising and built on a foundation of working-class defiance. Their 2016 album, You’ll Get Yours, set the stage for their rise, earning them a reputation as leaders in the American Oi! scene. After a five-year hiatus, No Time has returned with Suffer No Fool, a powerful follow-up that refines their sound and delivers their most focused and forceful album to date. Known for their explosive live shows, No Time has toured across Europe, Mexico, Japan and many U.S. cities, leaving a trail of unforgettable performances. <image:caption>Samiam is a punk band from Berkeley, California. Formed in 1988, the band has released nine full length albums and toured extensively throughout Europe, the US, Canada, Australia and Japan. The band members are Jason Beebout (vocals), Sergie Loobkoff (guitar), Sean Kennerly (guitar, vocals), Chad Darby (bass) and Colin Brooks (drums). The most recent album Stowaway was released in 2023 by Pure Noise records. Samiam toured in Europe with Hot Water Music and in the US with Bouncing Souls to support the album and released videos for the singles Lake Speed and Crystallized. Samiam initially was part of the 924 Gilman punk scene in the late-80s/early 90s and released their first 7” I Am on Lookout Records. Their first three albums - (self-titled), Soar and Billy were all released on New Red Archives. The band toured a lot during this period with similar little-known bands like Green Day, Jawbreaker and Seaweed. In 1993, Samiam signed to Atlantic Records and released the album Clumsy. The band did several successful tours including with Bad Religion and recorded a follow-up album but was dropped before its release, which put Samiam in a state of limbo for several years. Finally in 1997, they regained control of the recording, You Are Freaking Me Out, which was released jointly by Burning Heart Records and the now-defunct Tommy Boy subsidiary Ignition Records in 1997. In 2000, Samiam signed to Hopeless Records and released Astray, followed several years afterwards by Whatever’s Got You Down (2006) and Trips (2012) before moving to Pure Noise and releasing the aforementioned Stowaway. Samiam is touring the East Coast in May of 2025 with Iron Chic and Toys That Kill. The Portland outfit crafts songs big enough to fill an arena, while simultaneously conjuring the emotional intimacy of making out in the bathroom of your favorite karaoke bar. Alien Boy does this by harnessing the raw power of PDX’s Wipers’ but not being afraid to embrace the pop catchiness of rock titans like Oasis or Third Eye Blind, all while crafting a tone and power distinctly their own. Recently celebrating their 20-year anniversary, the Boston and NYC-based octet released their fifth studio record, "Dedication", in October 2022. Singer Obi Fernandez explains:"After all these years, we’ve remained dedicated to our craft, dedicated to this genre we love, and the new album is dedicated to the memory of our bass player's dad Gene Merritt, who recently passed. Dedication is about so many things we love." Since forming in 2001/2002 at Berklee College of Music, Westbound Train has shared their love of soulful ska and reggae music with audiences all over the world. Influenced by pioneers ranging from The Skatalites to Otis Redding, Hepcat to The Slackers, the band's infectious vocal hooks and high-energy live shows have found them performing all over the world--from the Vans Warped Tour to Summer of Ska toRude Cat Festival to countless reggae festivals and national and international tours. “These guys are true students of Jamaican music. It’s evident in every record I hear fromthem. The hard-to-achieve nuances of Ska and Reggae shine through effortlessly in eachone of their performances. As soon as that downbeat hits, you are instantly reminded of the classic tunes from JA.“-Roger Rivas (The Aggrolites) Westbound Train's albums are currently available online wherever you stream your music. Also available on vinyl are the new album,Dedication, as well as a first-ever vinyl pressing of their celebrated Hellcat Records debut, Transitions (2006). <image:title>Sparta - sparta</image:title>
<image:caption>When the world came to a halt, Jim Ward couldn’t stop moving. He’d just released a reunion album, Trust the River, as the frontman of Sparta when the pandemic hit, and as tour dates dried up, Ward returned to the studio. A year later, he debuted his raucous solo record Daggers and now he’s offering up yet another Sparta album to the world. “I was pretty anxious and depressed, and when I feel that way I know I have to do something with myself so I don’t self-destruct,” Ward says. “This project started in the midst of lockdown; I’d turn on Logic, retreat to my studio, and just get lost for a few hours.” The resulting collection of songs were entirely written on keys in what Ward considers an effort to stretch musical muscles he wouldn’t otherwise have had the expanse of time to indulge in. Boldly self-titled some 20-odd years into Sparta’s career, the album serves as a kind of reintroduction to the band, what Ward calls “a fresh slate.” Formed in the aftermath of At the Drive-In’s break up, the band underwent many lineup changes with Ward as its sole steadfast member; at this point, “Sparta” is synonymous with “Jim Ward.” On Sparta, he’s joined by the band’s longtime bassist/percussionist Matt Miller, along with a consortium of collaborators who contributed to the album remotely, including Tucker Rule, whose percussion you hear on Daggers. Others include Thursday’s Geoff Rickly, guitarist Michael James Adams, and keyboardist Kenny Hopper. “It’s been really important for me to grow past the music I was making before and to let go of what I perceived to be the ‘rules,’” Ward reflects. “Recording in a totally different way with artists I admire – some of whom I didn’t even know personally until I texted asking if they wanted to join me on this new record – was so enlivening during a grim time.” The overall effect of Sparta is one of relentless positivity, an optimism that can eclipse the darkest days. “Even though I carry quite a bit of depression with me, I always wake up in a good mood. Every day of my life, I wake up positive,” Ward reflects. “Writing this when the entire world had stopped, there was an opportunity to lose that sense of possibility.” But he refused to let that happen. Sparta supported the release in October of 2022 with a tour around America with old friends The Get Up Kids. The ability to get back on the road and see fans face to face was incredibly rewarding. There was one subject that came up over and over again while on tour. Wiretap Scars. The debut record was released 20 years ago and fans kept asking the band members about a tour to celebrate. “The idea of an anniversary tour was thrown around but I was on the fence to be honest,” remembers Ward. “After talking with fans on The Get Up Kids tour, I was sold. Let’s do it- but let’s do it our way.” Jim Ward is not a “live in the past” kind of person. “I loved making that record and have a lot of great memories, but I also have a lot of not so great memories from that time period- it took me a long time to feel good in these shoes again. The band has evolved and I have no desire to go backwards.” “I’m excited to play these songs and hear folks sing along, but I am who I am now. I would never want to be 26 years old again- I barely survived the first time. So I will play these songs as a 46 year old man, who is finally in a very happy, healthy place. I will work my ass off though, that never changes.” Sparta begin The Wiretap Scars 20th Anniversary Celebration Tour in May and will continue through the rest of 2023, at least.
